The government of Oman has achieved much since 23rd July 1970. His Majesty, Sultan Qaboos, has focused on those aspects of the economy that contribute to the improvement of Omani life and make Oman one of the more developed countries in the world. He supports the process of development of his country by making the right decisions in various areas. Up to now, the Government has implemented seven development plans for every five years. Moreover, the seventh development plan will have been accomplished by the end of this year (2010) and next year (2011) the government will begin implementing the eighth development plan. Moreover, all these plans seek to realize a long-term development strategy which has been prepared very carefully by defining the objectives, policies and the necessary mechanisms for its implementation.
Muscat airport development
An increase in the number of flights through Muscat International Airport and the number of passengers is expected. There are many factors that have contributed to this development. These factors include the rise of economic activity and tourism in the Sultanate of Oman. Moreover, the numbers of flights for most of the companies operating at the airport is increasing. Many of the airport development projects that were completed in 2008 made a good impression on passengers. These are some of the projects: 1- Re-equipping and maintenance of the 28 washrooms 2- Re-painting of the interior and exterior of the passenger terminal. 3- Installation of directions outside the terminal building for guiding travelers to the departures and arrivals buildings. 4- Posting of new images of the regions of Oman in different places in the airport terminal. 5- Expansion of existing Smoking rooms for passengers. 6- Re-equipping and maintenance of the mosque at Muscat International Airport. 7- Construction of a new entrance for travelers. In order to meet passenger growth at Muscat International Airport and to provide more parking for more aircraft, six additional parking slots for large and 8 for medium-sized aircraft were constructed in 2007. The total cost of this additional parking was 4 million OR. The expansion of car park No.1 was completed in 2006. Moreover, the total number of parking spaces for cars at Muscat International Airport is 1222.
Salalah Airport Development
The government has prepared for the development of Salalah Airport. Costs amount to 294 million OR. In addition, the implementation of this development will take 30 months. This project will include the construction of a new terminal building for passengers, an information center and a power station. In addition, there will be parking available for 2200 cars including VIP parking and taxis. The project also includes 29 elevators, 13 escalators and an 86 meter high air traffic control tower.
Oman’s Achievements for the period 2006 to 2010: some examples
The Sultanate of Oman is awarded the grand prize for economic freedom in the Arab world as a result of the stability of its economic policies, for keeping pace with global developments and for the development of its laws and legislation.
It is making progress in the areas of human development with a view to being included in the group of countries that have high human development indicators as shown by the Global Report on Human Development in 2006 that was issued in South Africa.
It wins the third place for the best suite destination in the Middle East at the Berlin International Tourism in2006.
Oman topped the list of Arab countries and was ranked third country overall in the world in the area of trade facilitation according to the report of the World Bank in 2006.
Muscat International Airport achieved fourth place in the Middle East for the year 2007 in terms of the quality of services provided according to a survey carried out by the Airports Council International.
The Sultanate of Oman represented by the College of Engineering from Sultan Qaboos University obtained membership of the International Organization for student exchanges. Moreover, it was the first of the Gulf countries and the sixth of the Arab countries to join this organization in 2007.
The Sultanate of Oman was ranked first on the index of the best practices of corporate governance in 2008.
The Sultanate of Oman achieved for the second year the first rank for peace and stability among Arab States and in the North Africa region according to the Global Peace Index in 2008.
For its green valleys, the diversity of its landscape and its cultural richness, the Sultanate of Oman was named best tourist destination in 2008 by «Vogue» magazine and Conde Nast publications.
The website ‘Qaboos Oman’ wins the prize for best site among Arab leaders during the awards ceremony of a website competition in the Arab region in 2009 which was held in Dubai.
